Lip filler aftercare and what to expect
Swelling, bruising, and the steps that smooth recovery.

Knowing what to expect after lip filler, and how to care for the area, makes the brief recovery smoother and helps the result settle well.
Immediately after treatment, the lips swell, often significantly for the first day or two, which can make them look larger and less even than the final result, so the lips you see right after are not the outcome. Bruising is common given the rich blood supply of the lips, and tenderness is normal. To support recovery: apply cold compresses gently to reduce swelling, avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and excessive heat for a day or two, sleep slightly elevated, and avoid pressing or massaging the lips unless your injector directs. Arnica or similar measures may help bruising.
The swelling resolves over several days, revealing the true result at about one week, which is when to assess it, and when any minor asymmetry from swelling typically evens out. Significant lumps that persist after swelling settles, or any signs of a complication like prolonged pain or color change, should prompt a call to your injector. For most people, the recovery is mild and brief, with the lips looking natural within a week. Planning lip filler so the swelling phase does not overlap an important event is wise. Following simple aftercare and being patient through the initial swelling lets the natural result emerge smoothly, and knowing the swelling is temporary prevents unnecessary worry in the first days.
